High altitude, thin ridges, stomach lifting exposure when climbing up or down a steep slope – mountain climbing is the culmination of many skills – navigation, strength, perseverance in harsh environments, weather prediction, expedition planning – and problem solving. The list goes on – but needless to say – there’s a lot going on during a climb.

The colours are stunning in the desert; the heat on the skin during the day and the coolness at night – in a weird way, it’s comforting, but at the same time, potentially dangerous. Body awareness is of primary importance when operating in a desert environment.

Growing up in Sudbury – I was used to the cold – deep cold. I’ve always found it exciting that it could become so frigid outside. The harshness of the cold is fascinating – sometimes, it feels otherworldly – and yet, we adapt and function. The equipment we use tends to fail, and yet, with proper body management (e.g. protection from the cold, proper hydration & nutrition), it becomes a walk in the “park”.
